Types of Chemical Peels and Choosing the Right One for Your Skin

There are a variety of ways to address skin concerns. The options range from non-intrusive to more invasive, and at Huntington Harbour Laser, our team can help you decide the right treatment options to best suit your needs.

One popular way of addressing skin issues like wrinkles, facial lines, and discoloration is with a chemical peel. The treatment uses chemicals like glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, carbolic acid (phenol), salicylic acid, and lactic acid to penetrate the top layers of skin and give you a glowing, radiant, and youthful-looking appearance.

But with different types of chemical peels, how do you know which one is right for you? Let’s take a look at the different types and what they can do for your skin.

Types of Chemical Peels

The most common types of chemical peels available are generally based on the depth of treatment. They include:

  • Light chemical peels
  • Medium chemical peels
  • Deep chemical peels

Light Chemical Peels

A light chemical peel only penetrates the outermost layer of skin. It’s a suitable option if you are dealing with skin issues like discoloring from sun damage, light acne scarring, or uneven skin texture. It’s also a perfect chemical peel for those who haven’t had one before.

Medium Chemical Peel

If you are dealing with skin concerns like significant acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, or moderate skin discoloration, a medium chemical peel may be your best option. The medium peel penetrates the outermost layer of skin as well as the middle layers. You will need at least a week to heal from this treatment and will likely experience some redness and swelling as you recover.

VI Peel

A VI Peel is a medium-depth chemical peel that penetrates the top layer of skin and reaches into the dermis underneath. The VI Peel exfoliates the skin and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin to reveal younger-looking skin. The solution is made up of a blend of TCA or trichloroacetic acid, retinoic acid, salicylic acid, phenol, and vitamin C.

But it not only addresses visible signs of aging; it also improves skin texture and diminishes dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It works on all skin types and promotes rapid cell turnover.

Deep Chemical Peel

At the most invasive end of the chemical peel spectrum is the deep chemical peel. Given the seriousness of this treatment, it can only be done one time and often requires three weeks to fully heal and recover. The treatment deeply penetrates the middle layers of the skin and is used to address moderate lines and wrinkles, age spots, freckles, and scars. It can dramatically improve the skin’s overall appearance.

Follow-up appointments will be necessary to keep an eye on your healing progress.
